Where to find help?
The individual should seek help from health professionals when situations occur in which alcohol may negatively influence health and/or routine, academic and/or professional functions, and personal relationships. It is important to emphasize that the type of help most suitable for each person depends on their personal characteristics, the amount they usually drink and whether they already have emotional, physical or interpersonal problems resulting from this use. Given this complexity, it is recommended to seek a general practitioner or psychiatrist so that they undergo a detailed diagnostic evaluation and the most appropriate treatment is defined. In cases where the patient meets the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence, he/she must have medical follow-up to ensure the success of the treatment, which varies according to the progression and severity of the disease.
The main types of treatment approaches available to individuals who have alcohol problems are: pharmacological; psychological; mutual-help groups (such as "Alcoholics Anonymous"); and therapeutic communities. Some patients benefit more from a particular model than from others.
In Brazil, the best-known free treatments specialized in chemical dependence are the Psychosocial Care Centers for Alcohol and Drugs (CAPSad) and hospitals affiliated to the Unified Health System (SUS).
